How important are the bottom skins? Empty
PostSubject: How important are the bottom skins?   How important are the bottom skins? I_icon_minitimeThu Oct 06, 2011 4:29 am

Hi everyone!

I've been doing some reading on the various skin types (e.g. pretty good article here: Drum Tuning Tips), and now have a pretty good idea of the various types of skins available, and how they affect the drum tone.

What I would like to know is how important are the bottom skins? For example, if I'm replacing single-ply for double, does it make that much difference that the bottom skin is changed too? How about leaving them off altogether (as I've seen in some kits). Also, for the kick drum in particular, does the bottom (front) skin really make that much difference, especially if the skins have holes cut in them anyway?

Many thanks for any shared wisdom/experience!
